What is an Oculoplastic Surgeon? Oculoplastic surgeons are ophthalmologists who specialize in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the periorbital and facial tissues including the eyelids, eyebrows, forehead, cheeks, orbit (bony cavity around the eye), and lacrimal (tear) system.

Who Qualifies for Oculoplastic procedures?

Although Oculoplastic procedures are more often associated with being a cosmetic procedure this is not always the case.

Many of our cases are medically necessary.

Some examples being patients may experience a noticed loss of vision due to excessive drooping upper lids, others experience drooping of lower lids causing dryness and discomfort to the surface of the eye. While there are many reasons for a medically necessary procedure, its important to go through the progress of a Consult with a specialist to understand what treatments would be suggested for you.

Here at Hamilton Eye Institute, Dr Betsy Luo specializes in Oculoplastic and will perform your consult where you’ll be given the opportunity to ask any questions you have as well as hear any and all options available for treatment.

What Should I Expect For My Consult?

As is the case with any patient and appointment, they are not always the same. Depending on the initial cause for being seen, your consultation procedure may vary.

For new patients present for a Consult for Lid Lift, you should typically expect a Visual Field exam which can take up to 15 minutes, this is necessary for insurance purposes and can not be skipped in order to determine and document the visual changes experienced by lid position. You can expect to not be dilated as this can change the measurements of the eyelids, but upon examination the doctor reserves the right to request dilation to ensure no underlying issues are present or require treatment prior to any surgical procedure.
